Apocalypse Loud: Sonic Youth+Starbucks= Mochachino Youth?

not_so_kool_thing

Paul McCartney was one thing, but in a move that surely must be one of the signs of our impending apocalypse, longtime New York noisemakers Sonic Youth have a new celebrity-curated CD compilation that’s being made available only at Starbucks locations (Pitchfork has the details). It goes on sale next week. And while I always suspected that the “youth” part of the band’s moniker would one day be just ironic, I don’t think I would have ever suspected that SY would make a move like this. This goes to show just how much things have changed. Next thing you know, Dunkin’ Donuts will be selling a Big Black compilation entitled Songs About Dunkin’.

This is truly awful news. I can never listen to Sonic Youth in the same way. Is that bad of me?

Man, I’d buy that Big Black comp in a minute. Full of their hits like “The Powder of Independent Trucking,” “L Glaza,” and their Kraftwerk cover, “The Mocha.”

I went to college in Chicago in the mid-eighties and I was the sound guy for a local band. Another band was in the practice space next door to us and their guitar player was was always bragging about how Steve Albini once invited him over for a barbeque. One day, when we were sure this other band was next door, we cranked up all the amps and started blasting out a cover of Big Black’s “Kerosene” but with the lyrics modified to “Set me on fire…Bar-b-que!” with numerous bits about “visiting Steve’s house” etc. Funny times. But Big Black was indeed a monster band.

Man, I can’t help but wonder what the cover art for “Songs about Dunkin’” would look like…
